Radical Imagination for
Racial Justice

Grants for artists of color to imagine a racially just future with their communities

Radical Imagination for Racial Justice (RIRJ) Boston supported sixteen BIPoC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) artists / collectives in 2021 to amplify their creative practices and visions for racial justice in collaboration with their community/ies.

In 2022, RIRJ and the Design Studio for Social Intervention (DS4SI) launched a Civic Design Course for BIPoC artists and organizers in Boston. This course and future iterations take place in the context of DS4SI’s Design Gym, a new community infrastructure and place to work out ideas, stretch the muscles of imagination, meet neighborhood arts and organizers, learn design techniques, and prototype new solutions to collectively rebuild our communities to be more just and vibrant.

We will continue to prototype these Civic Design classes, which aim to offer support, inspiration, and community for BIPoC artists engaged in civic practice work centered on racial justice. Our goals include prototyping a curriculum we can share broadly that inspires BIPoC creatives to design and implement effective interventions that advance racial justice in their communities.

Overall, the partnership between RIRJ and DS4SI represents a promising and innovative initiative with the potential to create meaningful social impact and advance racial justice in Boston and beyond.
